FMV’s operations are aimed, above all, at increasing the safety and security of Swedish society.
There is a major impact on the Swedish defence sector from 2005 onwards. The restructuring of the Swedish Armed Forces towards smaller, task-force oriented units in line with the EU’s Battlegroup concept is on-going, while continuing the development of network-based defence. The procurement of defence materiel involves an increasing degree of international collaboration, both bilaterally and multilaterally, and between authorities and companies in different countries. Another example of further cooperation is the creation of the European Defence Agency (EDA) and the work of the European Commission in support of a competitive European industrial base.
In recent years the number of development projects has decreased markedly and the trend in defence procurement is now increasingly in favour of materiel which allows interoperability with international structures. The acquisition is being replaced to an increasing extent by the combined procurement of goods and services. The whole defence sector is now under intense pressure to change with regard both to its content and its method of working.
FMV devotes a great deal of effort to be flexible and create better conditions that will allow us to meet the challenges of a changing world more effectively. Important areas are research and technology, assignments focused on new key technologies, progress monitoring as well as demonstrators, which grow in importance as they help to show how the results of both research and technology development can be utilised.
