What is the Military Innovation Programme?
The Military Innovation Programme is a technology‑development initiative that aims to identify innovative civilian‑sector technologies that can enhance the capabilities of the Swedish Armed Forces.
Within the programme we continuously develop new methods, such as TechDays and technology challenges. The purpose of these methods is to identify, evaluate and capture civilian‑driven technologies and raise their maturity for military applications.
Which activities are carried out under the Military Innovation Programme?
Orders issued by the Military Innovation Programme may take the form of an analysis, a test or a demonstration. Product development, however, is not funded, and the programme is not intended to overlap with other research‑ and development projects that FMV carries out on behalf of the Swedish Armed Forces. FMV never provides grants; every request is a procurement order with an associated delivery.
What is a TechDay?
During a TechDay we openly solicit ideas for technical solutions that could significantly improve the Armed Forces’ capability in a defined area. A TechDay is preceded by an FMV announcement on a specific topic, after which companies submit a short description of their idea. Following evaluation and selection, up to eight companies are invited to present their ideas at the TechDay. At most three proposals are chosen for an order that funds further idea and technology development. Previous TechDay themes have included sustainability, artificial intelligence, defence medicine and space‑technology applications.
What is a technology challenge?
A technology challenge seeks innovative technical solutions to a specific problem that could markedly enhance the Armed Forces’ capability. First, the challenge is announced with detailed information about the problem. After evaluation and selection, a number of companies are invited to individual interviews. Finally, one proposal is selected for an order that funds continued technology development.
